How does Smart Recommended choose quality and size?

ImgIng samples adjacent frames near the beginning, middle, end and other representative points, estimating texture density, average motion and change peaks. Those measurements are combined with source geometry, frame rate, video bitrate and audio to create the budget before encoding. Detailed, fast-moving or frequently cut footage receives more picture data and shorter keyframe intervals, while static scenes waste less bitrate. One fixed number is never imposed on every clip.

Why is MP4 the default?

H.264 video with AAC audio in MP4 remains the safest combination across phones, computers, social platforms and office software. VP9 / Opus WebM trades compatibility for better web efficiency. AV1 / Opus WebM is offered only when runtime capability detection confirms that this device can encode it.

Does visually near-lossless mean mathematically lossless?

No. Meaningful size reduction normally requires re-encoding. Quality-first VBR gives complex sections more data and simple sections less. Smart audio targets roughly 128 kbps AAC or 96 kbps Opus—similar listening quality for ordinary programme audio—so more of the total budget remains available for the picture. The higher-fidelity profile retains more subtle detail but still cannot produce a larger deliverable than the source.

What does the workflow preserve?

The picture is never stretched. Source geometry and frame rate can be retained or reduced deliberately, while audio and video share one total budget. Rotation, timestamps, A/V sync and container indexes remain in one transcoding path. The estimate is capped below the source before encoding; if a real result is still not worthwhile, ImgIng keeps the source in the same container or blocks a larger cross-container save.

Why not compress every frame as an image?

Video codecs exploit motion and repetition between frames. Separately encoding frames as WebP or AVIF discards that advantage and is usually slower and larger. ImgIng reuses the still-image tools’ content-aware quality principle, while actual compression stays in a dedicated video codec.

Compatibility boundary: a container extension does not guarantee that its internal tracks are decodable. Local transcoding requires HTTPS or localhost and WebCodecs. AV1 is enabled only when the current browser and hardware pass a real encoder check. Browser and hardware encoders can produce small size variations, so the UI reports an honest preflight estimate rather than a false exact promise.

Does video compression upload my file?

No. Container parsing, decoding, scaling, video encoding, audio handling and saving run in the current browser.

Why can some MP4 or MOV files still fail?

MP4 and MOV are containers. Their internal video or audio codec may not be supported by the current browser. ImgIng checks the real tracks before encoding.

Which output should I choose?

Choose MP4 for broad playback, VP9 WebM for efficient modern-web delivery, and AV1 WebM only on a capable device when a longer encode is acceptable.

Can it handle a one-hour video?

Yes, subject to device speed and codec support. Direct-to-disk output limits retained result memory, and replacing, cancelling or closing releases the conversion inputs.
