Local video compression: single and batch MP4 / WebM

Compress single or multiple videos locally, including MP4, MOV and WebM inputs. Encode, review and save one at a time, with actual sizes and reasons for retaining originals. Videos are not uploaded.

Capability quick facts

These facts describe the current product, not unshipped roadmap work.

Inputs
MP4 / M4V / MOV / WebM / MKV; real track codecs checked separately
Outputs
H.264 / H.265 MP4; VP9 / AV1 WebM when supported
Batch
Shared single-video settings; process, save and release one at a time
Quality and size
Adoption follows review; no promise of pixel losslessness or a fixed compression ratio

Finish in three steps

Confirm important settings before export; the processing location is always disclosed.

01

Import and inspect

Read real codecs, dimensions, frame rate and colour; batch accepts multiple files or a folder.

02

Choose quality and output

Smart prioritizes quality; explicit containers and codecs also require compatibility checks.

03

Process and inspect results

Review each encoded output, save according to your settings and explain retained or unadopted results.

Why does Smart sometimes keep the original video?

Texture, motion and change peaks inform trial encoding, actual transcoding and output checks; estimates are not final results. By default Smart adopts results only with at least 12% savings and passing representative-frame and integrity reviews. Otherwise it reports the actual encoded size and reason, and keeps the source. Sampling is not a frame-by-frame lossless guarantee.

Does MP4 always mean H.264?

No. MP4 is a container for codecs including H.264 and H.265. The default route considers source codec, bit depth, colour and browser capabilities. You can explicitly select H.264, H.265 or WebM. Compatibility conversion may increase size; the actual result is explained, never replaced by a renamed source pretending to be the target format.

What happens to larger outputs in a video batch?

Switch to Batch in the same workspace, select files or a folder, and reuse quality settings. Videos are processed, saved and released one at a time. Choose per-file recommendations, the original container or one output format. Save-even-if-larger is enabled by default in batch and can be disabled. It relaxes size rules only, not quality or integrity checks. Each item reports actual size and status.

Does local processing guarantee every device or lossless quality?

No. Videos stay local and runtimes load on demand; codec support depends on browser, hardware and format. Source resolution and frame rate are never increased. Smart aims for minimal visible differences, but lossy re-encoding is not pixel-identical. Direct-to-disk output is preferred where available; time and memory still depend on the device.
